New City of Fayetteville Sign Ordinance (summary)

The new sign ordinance for the city of Fayetteville was adopted on Thursday, January 17, 2002 by the Fayetteville City Council. The new ordinance will be available to all at the city offices soon, however, I will attempt to summarize the majority of the issues that affect the way we do business as REALTORS â .

First of all let me say that the REALTORS â had a strong presence at all of the meetings and the council appreciated and heeded the advice and input from those of us who were there.

  • Brown & white directional signs are allowed behind the right of way on corners with the permission of the property owner of which it has been placed.
  • No more than 2 stake signs are allowed on a lot with a residence. The top of the sign itself can be no taller than 5 ft, however the post it is on can protrude above the sign level (as in C21, Coldwell Banker & ERA posted signs). Signable area should be not greater than 5 sq. ft.
  • Weekend directional signs have been prohibited.
  • Vacant lots smaller than 5 acres can have 1 stake sign not greater than 5 sq. ft. with the exception of lots in designated subdivisions which can have two. Lots greater than 5 acres will be allowed to have a larger double-sided (but not V-shaped) sign that can be up to 6 ft. high with a measurement of either 4x8 or 4x4.
  • One additional sign will be allowed in a planned center permitted either by the owner or designated agent with a maximum area equal to 5% of the building facade which it is mounted on, or no greater than 150 sq. ft.
  • Subdivision my have 1 double sided ground sign not greater than 35 sq. ft signage area, or 2 one -sided sign not to exceed the 35 sq. ft area. All signs should be placed on private property off the right-of-way.

Again, this is a summary of the 25-page ordinance and by no means covers all pertinent information. Please obtain a copy of the ordinance for your records. Thank-you to Bill Bonner & the Government Affairs Committee for all their hard work.
