Governmental Affairs Committee

The governmental affairs committee worked with the City of Fayetteville during the months of December and January, on your behalf, in an effort to protect your ability to retain the same type of signage that we have enjoyed to date.

It seems that sign ordinances in certain parts of the country have been challenged successfully by saying that governments restrict the right of free speech when they dictate what type of message can be on a sign, i.e., real estate signs. As a result of these court cases, governments have concluded that they cannot dictate content of signs.

The City of Fayetteville reviewed their sign ordinance and asked us and other businesses to participate in the process of review and amendment of the ordinance. Because of our input, the changes that were approved were not as bad as they could have been. There are changes, however, in the placement and size of signs that effect us. Please contact the board office or the City of Fayetteville to get the highlights or a copy of the new ordinance.
